Otherwise, if you are confident in your abilities, I wouldn't worry so much about the rest. On the other hand if you DON'T have a job and the positions you're looking for require a particular certification, definitely look into those. So what I'm saying to you is, if you have a job currently and they are willing to give you something for the certifications, definitely do it. The biggest lessons I've learned have been through my experience with the exception of my time in college when I took programming classes. In all honesty I don't use much of the knowledge I've gained from them - OR the old certifications I received 10 years ago. The "certifications" I hold are meaningless to me. the courses I took were paid for by my company, and the courses were more of a "completion of the course" certification - where I was certified that I completed the course and passed the basics. It's been more than 10 years since I went for any certifications regarding the IT field, and I only hold "certifications" in industry specific software. Obviously if its being paid for it is a good idea to do what your employer wants. Your employer obviously wants you to get it and is paying for it as well as going to bump up your salary once you complete it.Ĭheers! At the end of the day, remember folks our job when it comes to it is about solving problems. So, I'd say in your circumstance to do it. But, don't get a certification for any other reason thinking its a magic ticket into a job. I analyze and take some advice from Eli the Computer Guy, some of you might have heard of and I have to agree with his take on certifications about if your employer is paying for them and going to bump up your pay, do it. Personally, I have no IT centric certifications but do have an college degree along with some professional development certifications in Python from the Coursera platform.Īgain, for me the degree was just merely a formality, and the certifications are more or less for me to better craft my technical skillset as I am more interested in potentially going down a computer science route with a focus more on software development.
